Sustainable practices require efficient
management of energy, waste, materials and water in order to minimize environmental impact. See definitions of sustainability here. What is Greater Cleveland Habitat doing to operate in a sustainable way?
Energy
Home Design: Design of energy efficient homes
lowers operating costs over time. Our homes meet
or exceed the highest Energy Star rating.
Waste
Reduce: Habitat enforces
a “Near Zero Waste” policy
on worksites and conserves lumber in a
number of building practices.
Recycle: We require all
staff and volunteers to participate in
Habitat’s recycling program and provide
accessible recycling containers for paper,
plastic, aluminum, and cardboard throughout
our facility.
Reuse: Habitat’s ReStore diverts
thousands of tons of typically wasted resources
from local landfills. We regularly
receive donations and rescue salvageable
materials from both commercial and residential
structures
Materials
Improved Quality
of Life: Habitat minimizes off-gassing to improve
indoor air quality by using low VOC paints and
installing carpet with recycled backing.
Water
Landscaping: We plant
indigenous species and provide all organic lawns
to conserve water.
