How long is the process?
From start to finish, the Habitat homeownership program can take between 12 and 18 months.
What if I am not approved?
If you are not approved, you will be notified via mail to the address provided on your application. The reason for denial will be explained in the letter, as well as contact information for Habitat staff that can explain further. You will also receive information for credit and financial counseling organizations that may be able to assist you moving forward. But don’t worry, you can always apply again in the future!
How many times can I apply?
There is no limit to how many times an individual can apply for a Habitat home, so we encourage applicants who do not make it the first or second time to reapply!
Is there someone I can speak to about the application process?
Please feel free to call our main line (216-429-1299) for more information. They will be sure to direct you to the proper staff member.
You can also email homeownership@clevelandhabitat.org.
What is sweat Equity? How do I complete it?
Sweat equity is the term we use to describe the time a homebuyer volunteers. Each Greater Cleveland Habitat homebuyer is required to complete sweat-equity hours prior to moving into their home.
Do I have to be employed?
No, but you must have a steady income for at least the prior year that does meet our income guidelines. Qualifying income may include, but is not limited to child support, alimony, SSA, SSI, retirement and income from your employment
How can I find out what is on my credit report?
You are able to access a free credit report once a year from each of the three reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. To obtain a copy of your free credit report, go to the website annualcreditreport.com.
Can I choose where I want my house to be built?
You must select from build sites that Habitat currently has available for purchase. Please review the neighborhoods we are currently working in under the “OWN A HOME” section. If you are not interested in these communities, then please keep checking our website for updated information.
