January 27th 2019 from 3PM to 5PM
Shaker Heights, Ohio – The Shaker Historical Society invites you to attend the 2019 Shaker Historical Society Annual Meeting – January 27th, 2019 at 3PM. This year, special guest Robert Madison will discuss his experiences of living in Cleveland and Shaker Heights in conversation with Executive Director Dr. Ware Petznick.
After a brief meeting of the members when officers are elected, attendees will enjoy a Fireside Chat with Robert P. Madison. Madison was the first black recipient of an architecture degree in Ohio. He is also the founder of the first black-owned architecture firm in the state – Robert P. Madison International. Madison was born in Cleveland, earned his degree at Western Reserve University and went on to study at Harvard University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Madison also fought in Italy with the famous Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division and was wounded in action.
His firm Robert P. Madison International, launched in 1954, had a hand in designing some of Cleveland’s most notable buildings including the renovated Cleveland Public Library, the Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Browns Stadium, Quicken Loans Arena and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
The Shaker Historical Society honored him as a Shaker Heights Visionary at its annual Movers and Shakers event in 2014 and is delighted to be able to share with the general public our conversation with him.
This event will be recorded and preserved in our archives.
This is a free event, but reservations will be made on EventBrite as seating is limited.
