#CG2019 FredWalksCLE: Stewarding the Beauty of Nature and History by Nature Center at Shaker Lakes
June 15 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
This exploratory hike around Lower Lake in the Doan Brook Watershed will highlight how local residents have committed to shaping their local park and its biodiversity. We will learn how to apply their experience to our own worlds, whether in our back-yards or at the community level.
The hike will begin at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, traveling over to and around Lower Lake. On our journey we will learn about the history of the lake and how removing invasive plants and planting native species helps keep the habitat healthy.
This hike is co-hosted by Kim Smith from Journey on Yonder (JOY), Friends of Lower Lake, The Doan Brook Watershed Partnership and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes. Participants will receive a native plant to take home with them following the hike.
This event is FREE and supported by the Cleveland Foundation as a part of Common Ground and #FredWalksCLE, a neighborhood event series exploring the natural environments that nourish and sustain Northeast Ohio.
Registration is required to attend.
The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is a 501(c)(3) that was founded in 1966 as the result of a grassroots community effort to preserve the Shaker Parklands from becoming the route for a freeway connecting Cleveland’s Eastside to downtown. Serving the community as a conserved green space, the Nature Center connects visitors with nature and inspires environmental stewardship in thousands of adults and children each year through engaging and educational programs. Learn more at shakerlakes.org.
The Doan Brook Watershed Partnership (DBWP) celebrates the beauty and function of the Doan Brook watershed. Because our watershed drains to the globally unique and valuable Lake Erie and St. Lawrence Seaway watersheds, the DBWP commits to protect and restore the Brook. As the region works to preserve the bio-diverse, freshwater resources of Lake Erie as an underpinning of regional revitalization, the DBWP focuses on restoring ecosystem services within the Doan Brook watershed to further local sustainability goals. Journey On Yonder (JOY) connects communities of color to outdoor spaces. We inspire JOY through information and awareness surrounding equity in our public green space while allowing nature to invigorate the soul.
Common Ground is a day of community conversation. On a single day, you can be a part of an exciting region-wide initiative to explore our community’s power to communicate and connect in order to build a stronger, safer and more dynamic home. Common Ground is presented by the Cleveland Foundation and thousands of engaged residents. Learn more at clevelandfoundation.org/commonground.
